About The Lodge
Freemasonry began in Rutherglen in 1865 at the height of the local gold rush. Meetings were held in an upstairs room of the Star Hotel. This Lodge was called Alexandra Lodge No. 1115 under the English Constitution. It was never strong and only lasted 19 years, closing in April in 1884.
However, only 18 years later, interest had revived sufficiently for land to have been purchased, and the Lodge hall built at the present site in High Street. The dedication of the hall and consecration of Rutherglen Lodge No. 188 was carried out on 31 July 1902. The centenary of the Lodge was celebrated in July 2002.
The members of the Rutherglen Lodge have been very active in the maintenance and development of this fine old building. Grand Lodge provided a generous grant for the further refurbishment of the Lodge room, foyer, hall, kitchen and bathrooms.
Lodge members enjoy the fellowship of like-minded men and are actively involved in opportunities for personal development, and contribute to the local community with various activities such as cooking the BBQ for the Glenview Fete, manning the gates for the local agricultural show, changing the smoke alarms for the elderly, and assisting the local primary school and kindergarten.
