About The Lodge

On the 29th August 1929 a meeting was held in the St Andrews in the South Masonic Hall, Little Ryrie Street, Geelong for the purpose of consecrating a new Lodge to be called “Moorpanyal Lodge” No. 467 on the register of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria.

The Consecration and Installation was carried out by the MWBro. WP Bice, Pro Grand Master. The sponsor Lodge was Corio Lodge No. 193.

Moorpanyal Lodge has an “Annual Visit” with an exchange of work with the Warrion St John Lodge No. 83. These visits were started in 1953 by WBro. GA Vesey and still continue today, being an important part of our Masonic Calendar.

Moorpanyal sponsored Lara Lodge No. 834 in 1963 and subsequently for some years exchanged “Annual Visits” with them. Lara Lodge used to conduct an “Annual Bowls Social Event” where they completed for the “Brian Ross – Duncan Blair Shield”. but due to social change this event was terminated in 1970.

In 1979 a “Social Committee” was established to organise events such as an Annual Ladies Night, Car Trials, Bowls, Crazy Whist Evenings and other Social Events, such a BBQ's, working bees after bush fires or storm or flood damage.

Since this time the Committee has continued to be active and progressive, with the introduction of trivia and card nights, Ladies in the South Christmas Meetings, and Progressive Dinners. Progressive dinners were first held in the Brethrens' homes but due to their success, social and financial, were two years ago transferred to the Geelong Masonic Centre, alleviating the need to move from house to house between courses. This building is admirably suited to this kind of activity with a kitchen and small comfortable meeting rooms.

The first daylight Lodge meeting was held in 1990 under the Mastership of WBro. HB Fitridge and has proved an enjoyable transition with a steady membership being recorded, 37 for year 2012.

Since going daylight attendances have averaged approximately 65 to 70 percent, reflecting the enthusiasm of the membership. One of the great benefits of a daylight Lodge is the involvement of the ladies who join the brethren for lunch in the South. Moorpanyal Lodge is greatly indebted to those ladies who contribute so much in the preparations of the South and other Lodge activities.

The “trading table” which has been operating for some 18 years has proved to be most successful adding to the Lodges Charity Funds.

In the late 1990's a decision was made to consolidate the Lodge meetings in Geelong into one complex, on ground level with access to adequate parking. A building in Regent Street, Belmont became available. In the year 2000 it was purchased for this purpose and suitably modified. This resulted in an excellent facility, which should accommodate Freemasonry well into the future. It is hoped that such a facility will help to create an interest in Freemasonry.
