About The Lodge

Brighton Grammarians' Lodge No. 433 was consecrated in September 1927 with many of the founding fathers of Brighton Grammar School as its foundation members.

Meetings were held in the St Andrews Church Hall until 1935 when the Brighton Masonic Hall was built.

Today, we still meet in the Brighton Masonic Centre on the second Wednesday of each month except January. Our meetings commence at 7:30pm except for our annual installation night which commences at 6:30pm.

When the Lodge was first established, it was a ‘closed lodge' which means only past students and current or past staff of the school could join.

For many years now that restriction has been removed and we have many members who have no association with Brighton Grammar School at all.

Nowadays, our only tradition that connects us with the school is our affiliation with the Old Brighton Grammarians' Society and a toast to the school at each meeting.

The hallmarks of BGL No. 433 are our friendly and sometimes irrelevant take on things at the same time, observing the splendour and rich history of the antient customs and rituals of Freemasonry.

We pride ourselves on the friendliness of our Lodge and especially the way in which we make new members welcome. Similarly we have several functions during the year at which members' families are involved.

For those who may question how they would fit in if they have nothing to do with Brighton Grammar School, be assured, that is in no way an impediment to joining No. 433 as almost half of our current membership are not part of the Brighton Grammar Alumni.
